VAT Guide
Do I Need to Pay VAT on Services UK?
If you sell services in the UK, VAT can become confusing fast. Whether you need to charge VAT usually depends on your taxable turnover, the type of service, and whether you are VAT registered.
Do services have VAT?
Many services in the UK are subject to VAT, but whether you personally need to charge VAT depends on whether your business is VAT registered.
If you are not VAT registered, you normally do not add VAT to your invoices. If you are VAT registered, you may need to charge VAT on taxable services and submit VAT returns.
When do you need to register?
- Your taxable turnover exceeds the VAT threshold: registration may become mandatory.
- You expect to exceed the threshold soon: you may need to register in advance.
- You choose voluntary registration: some businesses register before they are required to.
Why service businesses should check early
Freelancers, consultants, agencies, trades, and small service businesses can cross the VAT threshold without realising because the test is based on turnover, not profit.
Once VAT applies, it can affect your quotes, invoices, cash flow, and margins.
