How This Work Hours Calculator Works

This work hours calculator helps you measure the total length of a shift, subtract unpaid break time, and work out paid hours. It also estimates your pay if you enter an hourly rate.

You start by entering the shift start time and end time. The calculator measures the total time between those two points, then subtracts the unpaid break to show the actual paid time.

Paid time is shown in both hours and minutes, and as a decimal hour value. The decimal format is useful for payroll, timesheets, and invoicing, while the hours-and-minutes format is easier for quick shift checks.

There is also an overnight shift option. Turn this on when the end time falls after midnight, such as a shift from 10:00 pm to 6:00 am.

Shift length The full time between start and end before break time is removed.
Unpaid break Break time is subtracted from the full shift to show paid working time.
Paid hours The calculator shows paid time in both hours and minutes and decimal hours.
Estimated pay Your hourly rate is multiplied by paid hours to estimate shift pay.

Work Hours Calculator FAQs

It calculates total shift length, subtracts unpaid breaks, shows paid hours, and estimates pay from an hourly rate.
Paid hours are the full shift length minus any unpaid break time. For example, an 8 hour shift with a 30 minute unpaid break gives 7.5 paid hours.
Overnight mode is for shifts that end after midnight. It tells the calculator that the end time falls on the next day.
Decimal hours are useful for payroll systems, timesheets, and invoices, while hours and minutes are easier for everyday reading.
No. This is a simple work hours and pay estimator. It does not automatically calculate overtime bands, shift premiums, tax, or deductions.
It is an estimate based on the hourly rate and paid hours you enter. Real pay may differ if your employer uses rounding, overtime rates, or other payroll rules.
